So, I’m moving this week. It sucks. I don’t own a lot of stuff but when you have to pack it up, you suddenly wish you were a monk…. Okay, maybe a monk with a really kick ass laptop but still. Anyway, I’m still writing my column just for you guys. I hope you appreciate it. I also won’t be able to attend to my normal MMA Gospel Radio show co-hosting duties this Wednesday but before you start weeping, relax – your buddy, your hero, yours truly has arranged for a very special treat for you in my absence. Filling in for me will be none other than the man who saved us from communism at WEC 53 and is so witty that he has been featured in UFC’s Tweets of the Week column for over four months running, UFC lightweight bad ass “Dannyboy” Downes! You’re welcome. I give and I give and I’m still as poor as a monk but with a lot more shit – as I believe I mentioned. So, enough of my whining… there are a lot of fights to get to. UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis, Bellator 38, Titan Fighting Championship 17, and M-1 Global’s debut Challenge show on Showtime. Continue reading »

Last night MMA fans were treated to a host of spectacular fights thanks to offerings by both Bellator and the UFC. The two separate events, broadcast on MTV2 and Spike TV respectively, each featured a single victory via exceptionally rare by equally impressive submissions. At UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis, “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (11-3) finished off WEC transplant “Bad Boy” Leonard Garcia (15-7) via a modified Guillotine dubbed “The Twister” in the closing seconds of Round 2. And at Bellator 38, Season 4 Light Heavyweight Tournament semi-finalist Richard Hale (11-3-1) summoned the spirit of fellow Bellator competitor and decorated veteran Toby Imada (28-15) by defeating Nik Fekete (3-1) with an Inverted Triangle Choke. Here’s the video:

"The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung (bottom) pulled off a UFC first last night in his main card match against Leonard Garcia (top), submitting the "Bad Boy" via a modified Guillotine called a "Twister". With his victory, Jung not only successfully sought revenge for his previous loss to Garcia, but also proved himself a worthwhile adversary in the UFC's featherweight division. The Key Arena of Seattle, Washington got its dose of mixed martial arts action when the UFC came roaring through with last night’s UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis. With a heavy prelim card, the four main card bouts had tough acts to follow. The fans saw a  “Fight of the Year” rematch with an added twist when former WEC acquisitions stepped in the cage. Although the fight was in trouble with fighters dropping out due to injury, two Ultimate Fighter alumni showed they are beyond the reality television stigma in a thrilling war. The welterweight division got shaken up when two fighters seeking redemption over their past performances met with the hopes of getting back onto the road for a title shot. In the main event, the world saw a promising, young fighter take on a dangerous veteran of the game. While much can be said about the undercard, here’s a quick recap over the main card shown on Spike TV along with possible match-ups those victorious might see themselves in later in 2011. Despite his reputation as a brawler, Dan Hardy (red trunks) has very solid kickboxing skills that should allow him to easily negotiate "Rumble" Johnson's reach advantage. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

This Saturday, the state of Washington will get its first taste of live UFC action as UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis comes to Seattle’s Key Arena. Headlined by grizzled PRIDE veteran “Lil’ Nog” Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (18-4) and the dangerous undefeated blue chipper “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (7-0), the card promises to offer the northwestern fans an entertaining evening with fighters like Amir Sadollah (4-2), “Darkness” Damarques Johnson (15-8), “Bad Boy” Leonard Garcia (15-6-1), and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (10-3) on the slate. Perhaps the most sure-fired barn burner on the card though happens in the welterweight co-main event. On one side of the cage is super-sized wrecking machine “Rumble” Anthony Johnson (8-3), fresh off a humiliating loss to “Kos” Josh Koscheck (15-5) – eager to pay it forward to his next opponent. Across the Octagon from him stands British KO sensation and one time title contender “The Outlaw” Dan Hardy (23-8) who claims to be fighting for his job after suffering two straight losses of his own. Both fighters are finishers, with 22 of their combined 31 wins never seeing the judges’ score cards, and both men like to handle their business on their feet. The end result should be a fire fight with one man desperate for redemption and the other, a cornered wolf fighting for survival. Continue reading »

On Saturday, March 26 the Ultimate Fighting Championship lights up the night at the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington with UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis. On the card are a host of interesting bouts such as the main event which pits MMA veteran “Lil’ Nog” Antônio Rogério Nogueira (18-4) against the undefeated up-and-comer “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (7-0). Muay Thai artist “Rumble” Anthony Johnson (8-3) returns from a long lay-off to take on former welterweight contender “The Outlaw” Dan Hardy (23-8) in what is sure to be an outstanding striking battle, and in a repeat of 2010’s “Fight of the Year”, “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (10-3) volunteers with short preparation time to replace Nam Phan (18-9) in an attempt to mow down “Bad Boy” Leonard Garcia (15-6-1) in a featherweight rematch. Garcia walked away with the Split Decision victory in the first bout, leaving a question mark as to weather or not the “Zombie” can gain some life and defeat Garcia. In the welterweight division, The Ultimate Fighter alum Amir Sadollah (4-2) has a nightmare in store for him when stands across from “Darkness” Damarques Johnson (15-8), provided Johnson remains healthy. The bout has had an albatross hovering over it since the beginning when Amir’s original opponent, “Bang” Duane Ludwig (20-11), was replaced by “Lightning” James Wilks (6-4) who then also fell victim to a training injury. If the bad luck of Duane and James passes over Johnson, the bout promises to be entertaining. Continue reading »

Yet another installment of UFC Fight Night slams the Pacific Northwest and hits hard in the Key Arena of Seattle, Washington this Saturday night with UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis. The main event has veteran of the game “Lil’ Nog”  Antônio Rogério Nogueira (18-4) taking on uprising star, “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (7-0). “Rumble” Anthony Johnson (8-3) steps back in the cage after a lengthy lay-off with the hopes of making former top welterweight contender “The Outlaw” Dan Hardy (23-8) another victim of his knockout power. In a welterweight showcase, fan favorites and The Ultimate Fighter alumni meet when “Darkness” Damarques Johnson (15-8) and Amir Sadollah (4-2) step into the Octagon. In a repeat of 2010’s “Fight of the Year”, “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (10-3) steps up on short notice, replacing Nam Phan (18-9), to challenge WEC transplant “Bad Boy” Leonard Garcia (15-6-1) in a featherweight match-up. With Garcia getting the Split Decision victory in the first duel, will the “Zombie” rise from the dead to even the score or will Garcia prove he has Jung figured out? Come March 26, any doubts of their first fight will be answered only to have new questions asked. With the card free on Spike TV,  there is no excuse to not tune in. Continue reading »
