Last week, MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week explored a D’arce Choke submission set up from the previous week’s modified Syracuse Escape from side control. As always, we will turn to Ed Perdomo for a final technique building off of those featured earlier in the series, this time working under the assumption that the arm positioning for the D’arce choke was missed during the scramble. Ed will work with Trevor Boers to turn a missed opportunity for a D’arce choke into an Armbar to finish the match. Continue reading »

Last week, MMA Gospel explored a modified Syracuse Escape to get from side control to the sprawl position with head and arm control. The escape is a crafty one, but an escape or sweep is only as good as the finishing position it sets up. With that in mind, MMA Gospel went to Ed Perdomo and Trevor Boers to finish the escape with a fight-ending submission hold. From the head and arm control, Ed will demonstrate a D’arce Choke submission that is seen often from high level wrestlers and Jiu-Jitsu players in the world of MMA. Continue reading »

This week, MMA Gospel returns with another three-technique series involving an escape from a difficult situation. This time, Ed Perdomo will work with Trevor Boers to escape from side mount into a top sprawl position with control over his opponent’s head and arms. The first technique in this series will be the escape itself that will not only land Ed in a superior position, but also displays and alternative to simply jail breaking back into guard when caught in a tight side control. MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week finishes its current segment with a final submission from the quarter mount this week. Ed Perdomo will take the opposite approach that he has the two previous weeks to finish Trevor Boers by using an under hook from the opposite side and wrist control to lock in an Inverted Kimura. This move is excellent for times when an opponent is aggressively working to prevent you from getting the underhook that usually sets up the Armbar. Continue reading »

Last week, MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week revolved around escaping a deep Armbar attempt and using that escape to move into the beginnings of a quarter mount to set an Armbar. This week, Ed Perdomo and Trevor Boers will take that technique a set further with the counter to the counter. Instead of moving for extension of the arm to finish off the opponent, Ed will use a compression lock called a Bicep Slicer to finish off his opponent. The Slicer is an excellent alternative to fighting to free an opponent’s hand during an Armbar and is also an unexpected alternative to the Armbar. Continue reading »

We took the question to Ed Perdomo and Trevor Boers and Ed was able to provide the answer. The result is the escape to quarter mount in this week’s technique and three solid submissions for the aspiring mixed martial artist. Whether you’re here to learn a few new tricks to help your game or are just looking for a deeper understanding of what’s happening on the ground during the fights you love, Technique of the Week is here to show you what you need to see. Last week, Ed Perdomo and Trevor Boers demonstrated how to move from the failed Omoplata attempt directly into a Gogoplata choke submission. This time, MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week completes it’s current three move arch with a basic Armbar from the guard that the evasion of the previous weeks Gogoplata sets up beautifully. This again gives the mixed martial artist following this line of attack a distinct advantage as even the most basic of submission holds is elevated to another level by using the opponent’s own escape against them. Last week, Ed Perdomo and Trevor Boers displayed how to set an Omoplata shoulder lock using a Kimura from the guard to set it up. This week, MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week will feature a Gogoplata submission to counter the defense of the Omoplata. This series continues to follow up with attacks designed specifically to handle the defensive wrestler who likes to stay on top and work to “stay busy” and win the fight with control. Each submission shown by Ed Perdomo in this chain will be progressively more difficult to escape as the defense of each moves the opponent deeper and deeper into the following submission. MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week segment begins a new three-move arch today with an Omoplata shoulder lock used to counter a failed Kimura from the guard. Fourth Dan Hapkido black belt Ed Perdomo will demonstrate how to use his opponent’s momentum to set the shoulder lock, even when faced with a taller, lanky opponent. Opponents with long limbs such as Ed’s assistant, Trevor Boers, are typically more difficult to catch in shoulder and arm locks due to the additional leverage they have to defend with and the additional extension needed to complete the lock. Here Ed will show the proper way to set up these submissions against a longer opponent in a superior position. Continue reading »
