Former Strikeforce title contender and UFC veteran “Semtex” Paul Daley (29-12) bowed out from Strikeforce to sign with Bellator Fighting Championships and will make his debut against Bellator veteran Rudy Bears (14-10). The judges at the Mountaineer Casino and Resort in Chester, West Virginia did not have to make many decisions  last night, as the fighters of the Bellator 71 main card and Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament made the decisions for them. Heavy-hitting Strikeforce veteran “Da Grim” Brett Rogers (12-4) put an abrupt stop to former training partner “Concrete” Kevin Asplund’s (15-2) lengthy win streak before the start of the 205lbs. tourney. Late replacement Tim Carpenter (9-1) submitted Beau Tribolet (7-2) en route to a spot in the tournament semi-finals. ”The Hardcore Kid” Emanuel Newton (18-6) chained together a sixth consecutive victory over fellow Bellator newcomer Roy Boughton (8-3). It took Slovakian 205er and KSW veteran “Pumukli”  Attila Vegh (26-4) just 60 seconds to put away DREAM veteran “Benkei” Zelg Galesic (11-7) in the co-main event. The final act of the night saw multi-promotion 80-fight veteran “Diesel” Travis Wiuff (67-14) finish knockout artist and former USMC soldier ”The Professional” Chris Davis (10-4) in the first round. The inaugural Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament started with eight contenders, and after a combined 20 minutes and 52 seconds of combat, only four remained.  Continue reading »

Bellator launches its second Summer Series tonight at the Mountaineer Casino and Resort in Chester, West Virgina. The division in the limelight this go-around is the eventful light heavyweight class and its contenders seeking Bellator championship gold. IFC and Shark Fight veteran Roy Boughton (8-2) makes his Bellator debut against another newcomer to the promotion – MFC and Shark Fight veteran “The Hardcore Kid” Emanuel Newton (17-6). Bellator veteran “Rare Breed” Rich Hale (19-4) was set to return to the tournament but illness has prevented him from competing so a late replacement in Tim Carpenter (8-1) will welcome submission handy Beau Tribolet (7-1) to the cage. One of the sport’s most experienced fighters, “Diesel” Travis Wiuff (66-14), is on a quest for the 205lbs. title but in his way is former Marine and knockout artist “The Professional” Chris Davis (10-3) who has finished all ten of his opponents before the final bell. Former Bellator middleweight “Benkei” Zelg Galesic (11-6) makes his light heavyweight debut against KSW veteran “Pumukli” Attila Vegh (25-4). Vegh has finished 19 of his 25 opponents, by both strikes and submissions. In addition to the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament Quarter-Finals, Strikeforce veteran “Da Grim” Brett Rogers (11-4) takes on Brutaal fight journeyman “Concrete” Kevin Asplund (15-1). The superior stand-up of Matt Mitrione (white trunks) will likely end "The Thrashing Machine" Tim Hague's night in short order. Mitrione is 3-0 in the UFC, with wins over Marcus Jones, "Kimbo Slice" (black trunks), and Joey Beltran. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

Tomorrow night in Fort Hood, Texas, the UFC hosts its second Fight for the Troops event to benefit the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The night’s action includes performances from some of the UFC’s most exciting fighters including the sharp-tongued “The Young Assassin” Melvin Guillard (25-8-2), top lightweight prospect Evan Dunham (10-1), The Ultimate Fighter 8 alum George Roop (11-5), kickboxer “The Machine” Mark Hominick (18-7), American Top Team stand-out “Magrinho” Cole Miller (17-4), “Handsome” Matt Wiman (12-5), fan favorite “Hype or Die” Pat Barry (4-3), and boxer “The Mexicutioner” Joey Beltran (10-3). Also on the main card is a heavy-duty battle between The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 alum “Meathead” Matt Mitrione (3-0) and King of the Cage veteran “The Thrashing Machine” Tim Hague (10-4).  Mitrione has won all three fights in his short UFC career starting with a knockout over fellow TUF 10 competitor “Big Baby” Marcus Jones (4-2), then deflating the hot air from “Kimbo Slice” Kevin Ferguson (4-2) then Joey Beltran at UFC 119.  Tim Hague has fought four times under the UFC banner going 1-3 with his lone win coming over Pat Barry and his three losses coming by the hands of Joey Beltran, Todd Duffee (5-1) and Chris Tuchscherer (16-3). The bout is an important crossroads for both men, as a loss would likely cost Hague his place in the UFC and a win would send Mitrione into the fringes of the title picture. Continue reading »

Stuck at home tonight with no exciting plans? Think again!

Tonight at 11pm ET/PT, Strikeforce and Showtime MMA brings its fans Strikeforce Challengers 13 from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. The electrifying evening of fights is headlined by Tyron Woodley (9-0) facing Team Quest standout Tarrec Saffiedine (9-1). This fight should be tremendously exciting as Tarrec Saffiedine utilizes a unique stand-up style that has resulted in a three fight win streak going into this bout.  Woodley has looked phenomenal since debuting with Strikeforce.  He’s a perfect nine wins against zero losses with six of those wins inside the Strikeforce cage.  Woodley made Andre Galvao (5-2) look very ordinary in their October showdown in San Jose, California, even knocking him out only 1:48 into the first stanza.  This will unquestionably be the biggest test for Tyron; in fact, it is well within reason to say that Tarec Saffiedine could pull the upset and get the win. Either way, the winner of this fight makes some noise in the welterweight division. Continue reading »
