Following a successful Fight for the Troops event in Afghanistan, Wreck MMA returns to its home in Canada for their first event of the new year with Wreck MMA: Strong and Proud. The January 28 card at Casino Lac-Lemay in Gatineau, Quebec plays host to a dozen fights featuring the full gamut of competitors ranging from former UFC contenders to aspiring prospects making their professional debut. The main event highlights one of Canada’s top welterweights “Young Guns” Jordan Mein (13-5) taking on the seasoned UFC, Strikeforce, and Rage in the Cage veteran “Diesel” Joe Riggs (33-12) and is supported by “Boots” Mark Holst (8-3) clashing with “Showtime” Markhaille Wedderburn (7-8) in the co-main event for what likely will be Holst’s last fight before hanging up his gloves for good, as he looks to focus on opening his own MMA school. Fellow main card competitor Robin Black (3-3) also is rumored to be calling it quits after his bout against Mike Reilly (1-0). Fans additionally will be treated to seeing UFC veteran Kalib Starnes (10-4-1) facing Nova Scotia’s Matt MacGrath (5-4) in a middleweight main card bout.  The full fight card is as follows: Continue reading »

MMA is big with our neighbors to the north. So big, in fact, that the fan base has managed to overturn many MMA bans within just a few short months whereas a similar feat has taken US fans almost a decade. With a fan base this strong, it’s only logical that several solid Canadian-based MMA promotions have begun to climb the ranks. One such promotion is Warrior One MMA (W-1). W-1 normally holds their cards in Quebec, but on Saturday, October 23, the cage travels to Halifax, Nova Scotia for W-1: New Ground. The card is filled with some well known international MMA stars as well as some of the best Canadian MMA names. The main event is a heavyweight battle between Strikeforce veteran “The Grim” Brett Rogers (10-2), who has been forced to step out of Strikeforce after back-to-back losses to “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (31-2) and “The Demolition Man” Alistair Overeem (30-12), and fellow slugger “Warpath” Ruben Villareal (18-18-3). The card also features “Ninja” Murilo Rua (17-10-1) who is coming to North America for the first time since the collapse of Elite XC, and is chock full of Canadian all-stars and up-and-comers.
