Even at just 23-years-old, undefeated rising prospect Khabib Nurmagomedov’s (white trunks) accomplishments in the martial arts and well-rounded skill set pose a substantial threat to the UFC’s lightweight division. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

Tonight the UFC is back in action at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with a star-studded card that features one of the most highly anticipated rematches in MMA history. As made even more evident by the reported 10,000+ in attendance for Friday night’s UFC 148 weigh-ins, Zuffa can certainly look forward to having some of their highest Pay-Per-View numbers to date with a card headlined by current UFC Middleweight Champion and arguably one of the greatest fighters to ever grace the Octagon, “The Spider” Anderson Silva (31-4), and polarizing figure Chael Sonnen (27-11), who is looking to score revenge for the loss he suffered the last time he and the champ met nearly two years ago. But that’s not the only great rematch on the PPV portion of UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II, as fans will also get to see the long awaited rubber match between former light heavyweight champions Forrest Griffin (18-7) and “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (16-10). Win, lose, or draw, Ortiz plans on hanging up his gloves and flamed shorts and walking off into the sunset. Shoring up the main card are the likes of former Strikeforce champ Cung Le (7-2), returning UFC veteran “The Predator” Patrick Cote (17-7), JMMA star “Stun Gun” Dong Hyun Kim (15-1-1) and BJJ expert Demian Maia (15-4), WEC veteran “Money” Chad Mendes (11-1) and TUF alum “AK Kid” Cody McKenzie (13-2), and Tristar Gym fighter “Pride of El Salvador” Ivan Menjivar (24-8) and “The Hulk” Mike Easton (12-1) in the opening slot. The UFC is also supplying tremendous action in the undercard match-ups, with perhaps the most promising contender for becoming a main card mainstay being “The Eagle” Khabib Nurmagomedov (17-0).

Nate Diaz (right) has made extraordinary progress in his striking and combined with the significant height and reach advantage he has over his UFC on FOX 3 opponent Jim Miller, Diaz stands a strong chance of earning the W and the next spot in line for the 155lbs. title. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

The latest edition of UFC on FOX takes place Saturday courtesy of New Jersey’s IZOD Center. Big” Lavar Johnson (16-5) will look to make his sophomore appearance in the organization a success when he stands against fellow banger “HD” Pat Barry (7-4). The middleweights are next as “The Talent” Alan Belcher (17-6) squares off with “Toquinho” Rousimar Palhares (14-3). Welterweights “Big Rig” Johny Hendricks (12-1) and “Kos” Josh Koscheck (17-5) square off in the co-main event. In the night’s closer, Nate Diaz (15-7) looks to tie together a three-fight win streak, but that would come at a steep price against “The Mongoose” Jim Miller (21-3). Both men have the contender status attached to their name with just cause but after Saturday, only one can make the step closer to gold. Continue reading »

What do you get when you combine elite wrestling perfectly adapted for MMA, unpredictability and creativity that you really can’t game plan for and a freakishly long reach unmatched in MMA? The new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon “Bones” Jones. It amazes me that there are still people who are saying the hype isn’t deserved. The dude walked through “Shogun” Rua. Even coming off an injury or not in top form or whatever other excuses you want to make, to effortlessly dismantle and destroy “Shogun” is an unbelievably impressive feat. And we’re not talking about an isolated incident here. Great wrestlers, veterans, brawlers, Muay Thai dudes, and motherfucking “Shogun”: nothing has been able to stymie this kid – even for a round. No one’s unbeatable, no doubt, but if you don’t think the “Bones” hype is justified, you’re a hater. Hey, I get it. I love “Shogun”. What kinda dickface doesn’t love “Shogun”? And it wasn’t easy to watch his get his ass handed to him… but the facts is the facts, son.  The Jon “Bones” Jones hype train pulled into Newark last Saturday night and unfortunately, “Shogun” was under it. Jon Jones (red shorts) is a marketing and PR executive's dream with his dominant performance at UFC 128 as well as his heroic efforts outside the cage. By the end of the night, he silenced many naysayers by stripping the former PRIDE superstar "Shogun" (white shorts) of his championship belt. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

UFC 128 is in the books after a truly exciting night of fights at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The bouts included the long awaited UFC debut of the ultra-popular WEC standout and former featherweight champion “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (25-4), the last hurrah of PRIDE Grand Prix champions “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-10-2), and the changing hands of the most hotly contested title in the UFC following a light heavyweight championship bout between the prodigious 23-year-old phenom “Bones” Jon Jones (13-1) and the man long heralded as the greatest light heavyweight in the world “Shogun” Mauricio Rua (19-5). Overall, the card held very little drama outside the cage to soil the fans’ or the UFC’s opinion of the event and every main card fighter performed reasonably well, making this show the kind of event that fans wish every UFC could be. While the event as a whole has very few negative things that can be said about it, there are still a few individuals who came up short at UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is here to explore that. New Jersey native Dan Miller (13-4) may get to play hometown hero tomorrow night at UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones. Miller, originally slated to take on Nick Catone (8-2) in a preliminary bout, stepped up to the plate as a last minute replacement against top ranked middleweight “The Great” Nate Marquardt (30-12-2) after Marquardt’s original opponent “Sexyama” Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-4) was forced to withdraw from the match-up due to the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan last week.

In the following video interview, the elder Miller brother talks UFC 128, Nate Marquardt, his upgrade to the main card, and making a statement in the UFC.

UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones will take place this Saturday in Newark, New Jersey as the world’s premier MMA promotion returns to the Garden State. The card brings together some of the best names from the UFC’s acquisition and prospect building efforts over the last several years as WEC, PRIDE, and TUF stars all enter the cage alongside some of the UFC’s best homegrown contenders. The night opens with “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-9-2) against “The Hybrid” Brendan Schaub (6-1) and Dan Miller (13-4) vs. “The Great” Nate Marquardt (30-10-2) in bouts that showcase the two major elements of MMA, one being a stand-up war and the other a ground fighter’s affair. Next on the slate are two bouts from the lighter side of the UFC as WEC standouts “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (24-4) and Eddie Wineland (17-6-1) follow the lightweight contest between “The Prince of Persia” Kamal Shalorus (7-0-2) and ”The Mongoose” Jim Miller (19-2) to the cage. However, the headline light heavyweight title fight between “Bones” Jon Jones (12-1) and incumbent champion “Shogun” Mauricio Rua (19-4) is the bout that has the MMA world buzzing. It is a match of raw athletic skill against experience with as many outside factors thrown in to influence the fighters as one could want. Continue reading »

The highly coveted UFC Light Heavyweight Championship title is up for grabs yet against this Saturday night, as young gun “Bones” Jon Jones (12-1), still on a high from dominating and submitting then-undefeated top 205lbs. prospect “Darth” Ryan Bader (12-1) at UFC 126 last month, takes on PRIDE hero and reigning UFC light heavyweight champ “Shogun” Mauricio Rua (19-4) in the main event at UFC 128. The supporting acts feature an impressive gamut of old guard monarchs of MMA, former champions, and up-and-coming prospects with “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (24-4) taking on premier WEC Bantamweight Champion Eddie Wineland (17-6-1), “The Mongoose” Jim Miller (19-2) squaring off with “The Prince of Persia” Kamal Shalorus (7-0-2), New Jersey native Dan Miller (13-4) stepping in as a late replacement for “Sexyama” Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-4) and facing “The Great” Nate Marquardt (30-10-2), and last but certainly not least, famed kickboxer “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-9-2) vs. The Ultimate Fighter 10 alumni “The Hybrid” Brendan Schaub (6-1).

Newark, New Jersey will play host to the Ultimate Fighting Championship this Saturday night as UFC 128 roars into the Garden State with a Light Heavyweight Championship match between “Bones” Jon Jones (12-1) and the reigning 205lbs. champ “Shogun” Mauricio Rua (19-4) headlining a card packed with talent from all walks of MMA life. The old guard of PRIDE faces the new breed from The Ultimate Fighter to kick things off as “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-9-2) takes on the well rounded blue chip fighter “The Hybrid” Brendan Schaub (6-1). The always dangerous Dan Miller (13-4) then replaces “Sexyama” Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-4), who pulled out of his UFC 128 match due to the massive earthquake hitting his native Japan last week, as he puts his submission skills to the test against the former King of Pancrase “The Great” Nate Marquardt (30-10-2) and “The Prince of Persia” Kamal Shalorus (7-0-2) pits his WEC built undefeated record against the man who some say should be at the top of the contenders list in the lightweight division, “The Mongoose” Jim Miller (19-2). Serving in the capacity of co-main event for the card is a battle of WEC ground-and-pounders as the former featherweight king “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (24-4) continues his bantamweight crusade against the inaugural WEC 135lbs. champion Eddie Wineland (17-6-1). This Saturday, March 19, in Newark, New Jersey, the UFC presents a Cinderella story as “Bones” Jon Jones (12-1) steps into the Octagon to face UFC Light Heavyweight Champion “Shogun” Mauricio Rua (19-4) at UFC 128. The headliner is one that has most MMA fan on the edge of their seats as the old PRIDE hero faces the UFC up-and-comer and reflects the rest of the card perfectly. UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones is stacked with matches that pit standouts of the non-UFC MMA world against the cream of the crop of the UFC’s middle tier including “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-9-2) against The Ultimate Fighter 10 finalist “The Hybrid” Brendan Schaub (6-1), “The Great” Nate Marquardt (30-10-2) vs. a very game late replacement in Dan Miller (13-4), and WEC featherweight star “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (24-4), the longtime poster child of why the UFC should merge with the WEC, opposite fellow WEC stand-out Edward Wineland (17-6-1). Also slated for action are WEC warrior “The Prince of Persia” Kamal Shalorus (7-0-2) and UFC submission ace “The Mongoose” Jim Miller (19-2). The bout is a meeting of classic foes as Shalorus will pit his fast paced wrestling game against the slick submissions of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt from Sparta, New Jersey.
