Is Joey Beltran’s mustache good for the sport? Does it make him look too Mexican? Does it alienate the non-Hispanic MMA fans? In case you haven’t picked up on it, I’m being sarcastic.

Back before I became an MMA journalist pundit …whatever the fuck it is I do, things were different. 98% of my Twitter followers didn’t know what MMA was or weren’t fans. Now, my Twitter feed is nothing but MMA fans. At first I enjoyed discussing upcoming fights and being in the loop on the latest news but coming up on two years since the birth of SBoI, I have to deal with the other side of it. The dark side… (cue over-dramatic music)  A lot of MMA fans tend to over-analyze everything and make mountains out of molehills. Especially when it comes to what is or isn’t “good for the sport”. If some MMA fans obsessed over their children’s every action the way they do everything that happens in MMA, their kids would grow up to be neurotic freaks; possibly serial killers. MMA is gonna be fine. It’s time to cut the apron strings and let your baby grow up and you know, just try and enjoy it. Chael doing a Superstar Billy Graham isn’t going to ruin the sport. Relax. You have to realize that the so-called “casual” fans or potential future fans aren’t paying attention to all this minutia the way we sick bastards are. Anyway, feel free to continue being obsessed just try to do it with a sense of joy, passion, and humor rather than neurotic angst. If you can’t do that, try to keep it off my Twitter timeline. I’d appreciate it, you doughy wankers! (courtesy of @sonnench) Continue reading »

Despite opening one of the nastiest cuts seen in a good while, Roy Jones' (black trunks) complete lack of takedown defense allowed Derrick Mehmen (white trunks) to turn the fight into a wrestling match that Jones simply couldn't win. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

The proving ground where journeymen fight to show they are ready for the big leagues, Strikeforce Challengers, rocked the Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada for the second consecutive time last night as struggling veteran Jorge Gurgel (14-8) took on hard hitting newcomer Joe Duarte (7-2). Leading up to the main event was a solid card that featured a trio decisions with all the drama fans have come to expect from MMA events and one first-round submission with all the controversy fans have come to expect from a fight refereed by Steve Mazzagatti. Roy Jones (6-2) vs. “The Caveman” Derrick Mehmen (12-3) opened the bout in a blood bath turned wrestling match. “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (3-0) then made quick, if controversial, work of “The Monster” Sarah D’Alelio (3-2). Veteran “Bam Bam” Pat Healy (22-15) outworked Eric Wisely (18-6) to end the latter’s four-bout win streak and “Indio” Danillo Villefort (10-4) saw his Strikeforce debut ruined by the hustle of Nate James (10-6-1).  The true impact of the night’s events will only be clear once the dust settles but for now, there are a few clear implications of what’s to come. Opening the action are TKO machine Derrick Mehmen (11-3) and stand-up specialist Roy Jones (6-1) and two solid matches between “Bam Bam” Pat Healy (21-15) and Eric Wisely (18-5), and “Indio” Danillo Villefort (10-3) and Nate James (9-6-1) round out the event.
