The judges at the Mountaineer Casino and Resort in Chester, West Virginia did not have to make many decisions  last night, as the fighters of the Bellator 71 main card and Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament made the decisions for them. Heavy-hitting Strikeforce veteran “Da Grim” Brett Rogers (12-4) put an abrupt stop to former training partner “Concrete” Kevin Asplund’s (15-2) lengthy win streak before the start of the 205lbs. tourney. Late replacement Tim Carpenter (9-1) submitted Beau Tribolet (7-2) en route to a spot in the tournament semi-finals. ”The Hardcore Kid” Emanuel Newton (18-6) chained together a sixth consecutive victory over fellow Bellator newcomer Roy Boughton (8-3). It took Slovakian 205er and KSW veteran “Pumukli”  Attila Vegh (26-4) just 60 seconds to put away DREAM veteran “Benkei” Zelg Galesic (11-7) in the co-main event. The final act of the night saw multi-promotion 80-fight veteran “Diesel” Travis Wiuff (67-14) finish knockout artist and former USMC soldier ”The Professional” Chris Davis (10-4) in the first round. The inaugural Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament started with eight contenders, and after a combined 20 minutes and 52 seconds of combat, only four remained.  Continue reading »

Four-time Bellator veteran and submission savvy Tim Carpenter (gray trunks) steps in as a last-minute replacement to welcome Beau Tribolet to the Bellator cage. (Photo courtesy of Sherdog)

Bellator launches its second Summer Series tonight at the Mountaineer Casino and Resort in Chester, West Virgina. The division in the limelight this go-around is the eventful light heavyweight class and its contenders seeking Bellator championship gold. IFC and Shark Fight veteran Roy Boughton (8-2) makes his Bellator debut against another newcomer to the promotion – MFC and Shark Fight veteran “The Hardcore Kid” Emanuel Newton (17-6). Bellator veteran “Rare Breed” Rich Hale (19-4) was set to return to the tournament but illness has prevented him from competing so a late replacement in Tim Carpenter (8-1) will welcome submission handy Beau Tribolet (7-1) to the cage. One of the sport’s most experienced fighters, “Diesel” Travis Wiuff (66-14), is on a quest for the 205lbs. title but in his way is former Marine and knockout artist “The Professional” Chris Davis (10-3) who has finished all ten of his opponents before the final bell. Former Bellator middleweight “Benkei” Zelg Galesic (11-6) makes his light heavyweight debut against KSW veteran “Pumukli” Attila Vegh (25-4). Vegh has finished 19 of his 25 opponents, by both strikes and submissions. In addition to the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament Quarter-Finals, Strikeforce veteran “Da Grim” Brett Rogers (11-4) takes on Brutaal fight journeyman “Concrete” Kevin Asplund (15-1). Tonight’s Bellator 42 main event originally was intended to be a non-title superfight between Bellator Heavyweight Champion “The Polar Bear” Cole Konrad (7-0) and Strikeforce and UFC Strikeforce veteran KO artist “The Headhunter” Paul Buentello (28-13), but Buentello had to withdraw from the fight due to a back injury. Then Konrad bowed out of the event as well, deciding to wait for Buentello to heal and meet at a later event rather than face a late replacement. However, Concho Oklahoma will still be in for an exciting night of fights with a solid featherweight showing and both Season 4 Light Heavyweight Tournament semi-finals on the card. French import Christian M’Pumbu (2-1) goes to battle against undefeated Tim Carpenter (7-0) and heavy handed DJ Linderman (9-1) goes against the second man to gain instant Bellator super-stardom due to an Inverted Triangle Choke, Richard Hale (11-3). In the night’s remaining main card affair, the Bellator debut of Sengoku veteran and former Shark Fights and Cage Rage Featherweight Champion Ronnie Mann (18-2) lands him across the cage from a man who has submitted four of his last five opponents, Josh Arocho (13-9), with the winner most likely gaining a spot in the Season 5 Featherweight Tournament brackets. As always, MMA Gospel is here with the inside look. Continue reading »

Rage In The Cage veteran Richard Hale (10-3-1) goes against Nik Fekete (3-0) who owns a victory over Strikeforce rising force Ovince St. Preux (9-4). Bellator veteran Raphael Davis (10-1) will look to continue a nine-fight win streak as he goes against D.J. Linderman (8-1), a former heavyweight who dropped down to compete in the first ever 205lbs. tournament. MMA Gospel Young Gun "The Professional" Chris Davis is rumored to have been added to the Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament roster, which is slated to kick off at the end of March on MTV2. (Photo courtesy of Chris Davis)

It has been rumored* from sources close to “The Professional” Chris Davis (10-2) that the MMA Gospel Young Gun has been signed to compete in the upcoming Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament on MTV2 this Spring. Davis has posted an impressive resume in his two-year-old MMA career with five submission and five TKO/KO victories, all but two of which came in the first round, and he is expected to maintain this quality of performance against the other hungry blue chip prospects that Bellator has assembled to compete for a shot at Bellator light heavyweight gold. MMA Gospel concludes the Bellator: The Draft series by covering a few much needed additions to the promotion’s heavier weight divisions. The Bellator Fighting Championship (BFC) roster thins a bit at the top and new talent is severely needed to maintain the interest of the promotion’s divisional champions. The middleweight division relies almost solely on champion “Shango” Hector Lombard (25-2-1) to bring in viewers, the promotion currently has no light heavyweight division to speak of, and its heavyweight roster consists of “The Polar Bear” Cole Konrad (7-0), “Goliath” Neil Grove (10-3), and the one-and-done fighters who essentially utilize the organization to pad their records. These heavier classes are the divisions where Bellator needs the most work. Here are a few key players that could help bulk up the heavier weight classes to help Bellator more closely compete with rival MMA organizations. Continue reading »

UFC veteran Keith Jardine is one of at least eight fighters who was not paid by Nemesis Fighting for fighting in their MMA Global Invasion card. The promotion's checks bounced, and they have yet to attempt to rectify the situation. (Photo courtesy of Sherdog)

Nemesis Fighting’s inaugural event “MMA Global Invasion” has had its fair share of problems. Originally slated for November 13 in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, the show was postponed a full month due to an impending tropical storm. After yet another rescheduling as well as a venue change, the card finally took place this past weekend and was slated to air last night on Pay-Per-View. That didn’t happen, either. According to the promotion’s website, the event has been “rescheduled” with the “date to be announced soon”.  If only this were what all the current fuss is about.

MMAWeekly.com confirmed with at least eight of the fighters on the card that they were not paid by Nemesis Fighting – or rather, the checks were distributed but bounced due to insufficient funds in promotion’s bank account. Every single one of them bounced. Continue reading »

Live on December 10 from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in sunny Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, upstart promotion Nemesis Fighting presents their debut event: MMA Global Invasion. Filled with UFC and Strikeforce vets as well as great stylistic match-ups, the event has all the makings of what should be a stacked and exciting card. Nemesis Fighting: MMA Global Invasion is headlined by former UFC light heavyweight contender “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine (14-9-1) who desperately needs a win to piece together the shambles of his career. Also on the card is the devastating striker of the South, MMA Gospel Young Gun “The Professional” Chris Davis (10-2). Davis defeated the man slated to face Jardine, “Kiko” Francisco France (6-1) in his last fight and looks to make a case for a place in the UFC by defeating a man who posted a 3-1 record with the UFC, “Fire” Elliot Marshall (9-2). The event was initially scheduled for November 13 before tropical storms forced the event to be rescheduled. The effects of the delay on the fighters’ training camps and weight cutting should be interesting to see. Continue reading »

MMA Gospel was built on the principle of bringing MMA fans an insight into the MMA world they couldn’t find elsewhere. Continuing in that tradition, MMA Gospel began to search the country for aspiring professional fighters who were looking for that “one big break”.  These men would represent the diamond in the rough, the truly talented warriors who have yet to be noticed by the mainstream mixed martial arts media. Today, MMA Gospel welcomes only the second man to be added to the ranks of the MMA Gospel Young Guns, “The Professional” Chris Davis (10-2).

Chris is a former U.S. Marine who grew up in Gadsden, Alabama. He stumbled upon mixed martial arts while selling phonebook ads in Anniston, Alabama and just one year later had amassed an impressive 9-0 amateur MMA record and decided to turn pro and never look back. Chris is the Rumble at the Raxx Light Heavyweight Champion and trains out of the Headhunter Combatives Crossfit and MMA Training Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama under Mike Taylor. He is set to face TUF alum and UFC veteran Eliot Marshall (9-2) at Nemesis Fighting: MMA Global Invasion in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic on November 13. MMA Gospel CEO and staff writer Dan Griffin sat down with Chris Davis and this is what “The Professional” had to say: Continue reading »
