The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns with its third installment of “UFC on FX” this Friday at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. “Young Guns” Scott Jorgensen (13-5) prepares to clash with the always game Eddie Wineland (18-8-1) within the bantamweight division. “The Spaniard” Charlie Brenneman (15-3) and dangerous Brazilian Erick Silva (13-2) see each other in the co-main event in the classic “striker versus grappler” formula.  In the main event, “Mighty Mouse” Demetrious Johnson (14-2-1) and “Uncle Creepy” Ian McCall (11-2-1) will meet again in a rematch of the UFC’s inaugural flyweight tournament. In the midst of all the action, “Quicksand” Mike Pyle (22-8-1) and “The Dentist” Josh Neer (33-10-1) meet in a welterweight exhibition. Scott Jorgensen's (white trunks) wrestling abilities are his key to success at UFC on FX 3, as long as he remembers to use them. (Photo courtesy of Sherdog)

Following a very entertaining TUF: Live Finale by seven days, the UFC returns to FX for a third time to settle the score between “Mighty Mouse” Demetrious Johnson (14-2-1) and “Uncle Creepy” Ian McCall (11-2-1). The card will also feature “The Spaniard” Charlie Brenneman (15-3) in a welterweight tilt with dangerous Brazilian grappler “Indio” Erick Silva (13-2) and “The Dentist” Josh Neer (33-10) as he looks to remain undefeated in his third UFC run against Xtreme Couture submission ace “Quicksand” Mike Pyle (22-8). Drawing opening duties for the main card are WEC stand-outs “Young Guns” Scott Jorgensen (13-5) and Eddie Wineland (18-8-1). Mac Danzig (white trunks) and Matt Wiman's (blue trunks) "Fight of the Night"-earning rematch was a perfect opening to an action packed night of fights at UFC on Versus 6. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

The UFC presented fans with its sixth offering on the NBC-affiliated Versus network last night and the response was better than anyone could have hoped. In addition to the highest attendance (9,380) and largest live gate ($706,755), the card was also the very first time the UFC on Versus series offered up a championship bout. “Dominator” Dominick Cruz (18-1) made a second successful title defense in a fast-paced war with “Mighty Mouse” Demetrious Johnson (12-2). “Skyscraper” Stefan Struve (20-5) made headway in his career after surviving an early deficit to come back and submit “Hype or Die” Pat Barry (5-5). “Rumble” Anthony Johnson (10-3) turned out Charlie Brenneman’s (14-3) lights in a “Knockout of the Night” performance, and Mac Danzig (20-9-1) fell short for a second time against “Handsome” Matt Wiman (14-6). Overall, the card was an entertaining affair that shakes up the lower levels of each fighter’s division and sets up several interesting propositions for Cruz’s next defense. Continue reading »

Dominick Cruz (red trunks) will defend his UFC Bantamweight Championship for the fourth time against "Mighty Mouse" Johnson at UFC on Versus 6. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

Saturday, October 1 the UFC returns to VS for UFC on Versus 6: Cruz vs. Johnson. Kicking things off for the card is a lightweight tilt as ”Handsome” Matt Wiman (13-6) looks to get back on track with a second win over the TUF veteran Mac Danzig (20-8-1). Next on tap are super-sized welterweight ”Rumble” Anthony Johnson (9-3) and Charlie Brenneman (14-2).  ”HD” Pat Barry (5-4) and “Skyscraper” Stefan Struve (18-5) will look to stay above .500 in the UFC in a heavyweight co-headliner and then the main event pits current seemingly unstoppable UFC  Bantamweight Champion “The Dominator” Dominick Cruz (17-1) against the red hot ”Mighty Mouse” Demetrious Johnson (12-1). The card has everything the fans have come to expect from the UFC and should be a stellar night of unarmed combat. Continue reading »

Chris Lytle (black trunks) and Dan Hardy (red trunks) are two of the most obvious examples of game fighters, those athletes who willingly gamble their health and career against the victory to give fans what they want. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

It can read it on any MMA forum: “the sport is being taken over by wrestlers”, “fighters used to fight, now they play it safe”, “I miss PRIDE rules” (we all do, relax). Even veteran fighters such as “The Prodigy” BJ Penn (16-7-2) have voiced their displeasure with where the sport is supposedly headed. The pundits worry that the days of brawls at the center of the cage are over; overshadowed by collegiate and Olympic dynamos that stifle the brutish element of the sport they fell in love with. But what exactly is all the fuss about? A few more wrestlers? The sport has had plenty of wrestlers since its inception. What the sport needs are gamers. No, not the gamers that obsess over the next World of Warcraft map update. The gamers that MMA needs grit their teeth and plunge headfirst into battle with another fighter. And whether it’s nostalgia for the  “glory days” of MMA or the odd disdain fight fans have grown for the ground game, the furrowed brows of MMA fandom have forgotten that regardless of style, gamers still exist in this sport. It just so happens that this past weekend’s UFC Live on Versus 5 brought this point home for fight fans of all persuasions, showing that gameness will trump fighting style any day. And the future of this sport is full of game fighters.
