Last week, Technique of the Week showed readers how to end the scramble from our roll out mount escape by using an overhook to control posture and set an Ankle Lock submission. However, sometimes the opportunity for the overhook isn’t there. The nature of a scramble is that no one is really in control so there is no guarantee that the foot will be in a good position to overhook. This time, Ed Perdomo and Bob Berard will cover another option following the escape, this time rolling into back mount and taking a Rear Naked Choke. Continue reading »

Last week, Ed Perdomo and Bob Berard demonstrated a backdoor escape from the high mount to initiate a scramble for back control. As always, MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week will continue along that same line and build off of the previous week’s maneuver.  This week, Ed will move from the scramble he created last week directly into a fight ending Ankle Lock/Calf Compression that will leave him in control of his opponent’s hips and ready to counter any defense. MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week returns after a one week break to deliver another trio of ground fighting techniques. This week, Ed Perdomo and Bob Berard will explore an escape from the high mount. There are few positions that are worse to get caught in than an opponent’s high mount. When mounted, escape is the only option a fighter has. This week, Ed Perdomo will not only escape the full mount, but will take his opponent’s back in the process with a gutsy escape out the backside of his opponent’s position. Continue reading »

This weeks technique will bring to a close this three move arch in MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week. Last week, Hapkido 4th dan Ed Perdomo showed how to follow a vicious slam with an even more vicious over hook style Armbar in order to finish an opponent who attempts a standing Guillotine Choke. This week, MMA Gospel will examine what to do if you fail to obtain the over hook following the takedown. Here MMA Gospel shows how to defeat an opponent with a Head and Arm Choke from side mount following the High Crotch Slam from two weeks ago. Continue reading »

Last week, MMA Gospel and Ed Perdomo went over the basics of standing guillotine defense and how to use it to set up a hard slam to side mount. It is never a good idea to assume that one move will finish the fight, so as usual MMA Gospel has broken down several ways to finish the opponent following the previous week’s technique, This week, Ed Perdomo will take us through a devastating Over Hook Armbar from the side mount that feeds directly from the landing position of the slam. The use of an over hook style Armbar ensures immediate victory by submission or TKO as it is a finishing hold as opposed to a submission lock.  Continue reading »

Inspired by the recent rash of Guillotine Choke related woes suffered by the two members the Team Koscheck on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter, Ed Perdomo felt the need to start this arch of MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week with a crash course in properly defending the standing Guillotine Choke that was the beginning of the end for Amir Khillah (7-4) and  Marc Stevens (12-5) (twice). Here, Ed will display first how to defend the choke itself and then how to counter it with a high crotch single leg takedown. Continue reading »

MMA Gospel ends its arch on defensive grappling with a simple submission from the mount position that was achieved through each of the previous techniques. The armbar from the mount serves two very distinct purposes in this instance. First, it will give you a method to end the fight after utilizing the techniques previously discussed. Second, the armbar can easily be released to allow a grappling partner to roll into guard or even take the back. This means that it can become a flow drill where you constantly move from back escape, to armbar, to guard sweep, to armbar, to back, etc. allowing you to experience the flow of moving from technique to technique with a smooth action.  Continue reading »

Last week, MMA Gospel started an arch on defensive grappling. This week, week continue along those lines with a deceptively simple escape from the most feared position in MMA, full back mount.  When a fighter gets back mounted, there are only two thoughts on his/her mind: Survive and Escape. Unfortunately for many MMA fighters, they are forced to rely solely on the former using the “end of the round” escape technique. Here Ed Perdomo displays a simple, relaxed escape that requires very little training and often causes the fighter in the dominate position to waste copious amounts of energy attempting to maintain the position, all the while moving to tack control of the fight back from the opponent. In a world were most fighters turn from back control into their opponent’s mount before escaping, a fighter who can move from back mount to a dominate position like the full mount has a distinct advantage. MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week is dedicated to focusing on the area’s of grappling that are extremely important in mixed martial arts but are overlooked in most online training resources.  As always, MMA Gospel has called upon Hapkido master Ed Perdomo for his insight into the world of MMA ground work.  This time, we have chosen to focus on defensive grappling.  Every fighter and fan has heard the infamous “submissions are great in practice but their a lot harder to pull off when you’re getting punched in the face” line and it is a very true statement. Often in MMA world class submission fighters get thrashed in their own guard, unable to muster even an attempt at a submission, when faced with an aggressive ground-and-pound attack. This week, MMA Gospel focuses on just that, defending G-n-P. Ed will display how to defend against an opponent’s punches and use the defense to move into a classic Elevator Sweep to the mount position. Continue reading »
