Rashad Evans cracks Tito Ortiz Zuffa 900x719 UFC on FOX 2 Pre Fight Breakdown: Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis
Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion “Sugar” Rashad Evans (right) has the advantages of a more solid striking game and experience on his side in his UFC on FOX 2 match-up against Phil Davis, who, though undefeated, has only half the number of fights to his credit and is predominantly a ground fighter. The UFC takes its second FOX Network fight card to Chicago, Illinois’ United Center tomorrow night for UFC on FOX 2: Evans vs. Davis. The national broadcast network will feature three fights this outing, including a newly shuffled fight between budding middleweight prospect “All American” Chris Weidman (7-0) and crafty submission veteran Demian Maia (15-3). The new co-main event features not only a battle for #1 contender to “The Spider” Anderson Silva’s (31-4) title, but also the crown for the most polarizing figure in MMA as Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) squares off against “The Count” Michael Bisping (22-3) in what is sure to be an all out war of skill and words. The main event is also a title eliminator as “Sugar” Rashad Evans (16-1-1) and “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (9-0) vie for the next crack at 205lbs. phenom “Bones” Jon Jones (15-1). This fight is not being as hyped as it should be, as both fighters are highly skilled and pose very interesting problems to each other. The winner will also be heavily compared to the dynamic champ so a good showing here is a must for either fighter.

GSP vs. Jake Shields UFC 129 Zuffa UFC 129: The Aftermath

As many expected, Georges St. Pierre (left) defeated Jake Shields (right) to keep his welterweight title after the five-round main event. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

In the largest UFC event in history, the hype riding behind one of the organization’s most stacked cards did not fall short of expectations within the Rogers Centre of Ontario, Toronto, Canada. A former champion made his debut in the UFC against a rising star. A veteran of the game proves to show that even old dogs can learn new tricks. A legend of the game made the walk to the cage for the final time with a potential UFC Hall of Famer waiting inside. A hometown hero and a fighter who destroys all in his way let their fists fly with a title on the line. In the main event, one of the world’s greatest fighters battled against a specialist who has been unfamiliar with defeat for a period of time. With all the historic events that went down at UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields this past Saturday night, here is a recap of the evening as well as future match-ups that might take place for the victors. "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung (bottom) pulled off a UFC first last night in his main card match against Leonard Garcia (top), submitting the "Bad Boy" via a modified Guillotine called a "Twister". With his victory, Jung not only successfully sought revenge for his previous loss to Garcia, but also proved himself a worthwhile adversary in the UFC's featherweight division. The Key Arena of Seattle, Washington got its dose of mixed martial arts action when the UFC came roaring through with last night’s UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis. With a heavy prelim card, the four main card bouts had tough acts to follow. The fans saw a  “Fight of the Year” rematch with an added twist when former WEC acquisitions stepped in the cage. Although the fight was in trouble with fighters dropping out due to injury, two Ultimate Fighter alumni showed they are beyond the reality television stigma in a thrilling war. The welterweight division got shaken up when two fighters seeking redemption over their past performances met with the hopes of getting back onto the road for a title shot. In the main event, the world saw a promising, young fighter take on a dangerous veteran of the game. While much can be said about the undercard, here’s a quick recap over the main card shown on Spike TV along with possible match-ups those victorious might see themselves in later in 2011. Brazilian Chute Boxe practitioners “Cyborg” Evangelista Santos (17-14) and “Cyborg” Cristiane Santos (10-1) could be considered the first couple of MMA.  Team Black House fighters “Lil’ Nog” Antonio Rogerio Nogueria (18-4) and “Minotauro” Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria (32-6-1) can be deemed the siblings of submission, and Dan Miller (13-4) and “The Mongoose” Jim Miller (19-2) could be considered the true blue-collar brothers of battle. Now, in the latest edition of families who are making their legacy known in combat, “The Natural” Randy Couture’s (19-10) son, “Natural Light” Ryan Couture (1-0 Professional, 4-0-1 Amateur), is getting set to blaze his path in MMA history. Although Randy made his career known by using his Greco-Roman wrestling to bend his opponents to his will, his son’s legacy in the amateur level is being paved with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that has ended each of his five wins via submission. With professional level fighters and trainers alongside him at Xtreme Couture, Ryan might just have the right tools at his disposal to take the lightweight bracket by storm. After a successful first round submission victory in his professional debut last summer, Couture is returning February 18 under the Strikeforce banner hoping to keep the winning streak alive. SBoI 1 250x238 Spilled Bag of Fights: Oww! Reem!

So, here’s the thing about me – I’m really lazy. So, why would I choose to start this little weekly MMA wrap-up column after a week of UFC119, WEC51, Bellator and K1? Not to mention the fight between Scotch and my liver – it was a draw. Well, despite being lazy… really lazy… I’m also somewhat compulsive and couldn’t leave all of those fights just sitting there uncommented on. I don’t want to debut my column on a slow MMA week and disappoint dozens of you. (Hi, Mom!)

I’m told that I have more or less free reign with this column. So, I’m going to put that to the test. Notice that I haven’t even gotten to fights yet. Shut up. You love it. Okay, okay. I’ll wing it. I’m sure that writers who are less lazy, undisciplined and hungover than I am will give you the technical analysis. I’m going for the big picture. Continue reading »

UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop may go down as the most disappointing card since the ill-fated UFC 33 card when Zuffa first took control of the UFC.  Oddly enough, the majority of that tone was set by the only fight on the card that did not end in a decision, the main event battle between Frank Mir (14-5) and “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-9-2).  Overall, the card was fairly solid with back and forth battles between determined opponents that did all they could to finish the fights, but fell just short.  The sad thing is that the main event was so terrible that it caused the entire card to be looked on in a negative light and if the fans were the ones calling the shots, there would be no “The Good” section in this article.  Luckily for men like Matt Mitrione (3-0), “Lights Out” Chris Lytle (30-17-5), and Evan Dunham (10-1), who all had very good performances, they work for Dana White.  For all the grief Dana gets for how he treats fighters or how he does business, the fact remains that he is an educated fan who rewards fighters for their efforts regardless of the response a card produces.  Where most promoters would look at everyone on the card in a poor light, Dana will undoubtedly give those who fought for the win on the under card their do.  Let’s explore who those athletes are in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.     The UFC returns to Indianapolis, Indiana on September 25 for UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop.  Along with head liners “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-8-2) and Frank Mir (13-5), Dana White and Joe Silva have provided us with stellar card filled with old dogs and new blood. Early in the night, undefeated Evan Dunham (10-0) will face grizzled vet “The Muscle Shark” Sean Sherk (33-4-1).  In the co-main event, Arizona wrestler and TUF season eight winner “Darth” Ryan Bader (11-0) will face his first elite opponent when he steps into the Octagon against “Little Nog” Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (18-3).  Nogueira and Bader are both coming off lackluster victories over “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine (14-9-1) and “The Hitman” Jason Brilz (18-3-1) respectively and need strong showings to restore the faith the fans had in them.  This fight is an interesting meeting between two men who both have serious questions to answer before they see the sunny side of possible title contention. For Bader, it’s “Is Ryan the real deal or just a replacement gatekeeper for Jardine?” For Rogerio it’s “Was he just a flash in the pan riding his brother’s coattails?”    Continue reading »

On September 25, the UFC again proves the depth of its roster.  UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop brings the thousands of Indianapolis, Indiana fans a card packed with interesting match-ups between elite competitors with no title or number one contendership bouts on the card, proving that the UFC has more than just the top three or four fighters in every division.  In addition to the marquee fight between former heavyweight kingpin Frank Mir (13-5) and 2006 Pride Open Weight Grand Prix champion “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (27-8-2), UFC 119 brings us intriguing match-ups between “Little Nog” Antonio Rogerio Nogueria (18-3) and “Darth” Ryan Bader (11-0), “The Terror” Matt Serra (10-6) and “Lights Out” Chris Lytle (29-17-5), and a lightweight tilt between undefeated Evan Dunham (10-0) and the former lightweight champ “The Muscle Shark” Sean Sherk (33-4-1).  Sherk brings a wealth of experience and powerful wrestling into the cage after a sixteen month lay-off following his defeat at the hands of current champion “The Answer” Frankie Edgar (13-1). Dunham continues his escalation in competition by pitting the submission skills and crisp striking against Sherk’s experienced top control.  While this bout has no title, or even contention implications, it is as solid a match up as anyone could ask for as Sherk struggles regain relevance in the UFC and Dunham looks to prove that he deserves his spot as a top ten ranked lightweight.
