The Ultimate Fighting Championship descends upon the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden this Saturday to present its second fight card on FOX affiliate network Fuel TV. UFC on Fuel TV: Gustafsson vs. Silva starts off the main card with a pair of WEC alumni as “One Punch” Brad Pickett (20-6) and “The Angel of Death” Damacio Page (15-6) fight it out to get back in the good graces of the Zuffa brass on the heels of a rough patch in each man’s respective career. TUF alum “The Darkness” DaMarques Johnson (15-9) faces off with British submission specialist “The One” John Maguire (17-3) in a welterweight affair, followed by German kickboxer Dennis Siver (19-8) making his 145lbs. debut against fellow striker “The Gun” Diego Nunes (17-2). Then, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu aficionado Paulo Thiago (14-3) welcomes long awaited prospect and United Glory, Sengoku, and Shooto veteran “The Great” Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4-1) to the UFC’s Octagon. Two of the middleweight division’s most battle-tested fighters, USMC war veteran “All-American” Brian Stann (11-4) and former pro boxer “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8) will be slinging fists in the UFC on Fuel 2 main event. The marquee bout of the evening pits Brazilian bomber Thiago Silva (14-2) against hometown fighter and rising contender “The Mauler” Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) in a light heavyweight match-up that is a frontrunner for “Knockout of the Night” honors.

Las Vegas oddsmakers we are not, but nonetheless, here is the MMA Gospel staff’s most valiant effort at determining who will come out on top at UFC on Fuel 2. Continue reading »

“One Punch” Brad Pickett (20-6) and “The Angel of Death” Damacio Page (15-6) will hit the airwaves on Fuel TV this Saturday to kick off the first UFC fight card in over a month. Shored up by fights like “The Darkness” DaMarques Johnson (15-9) vs. “The One” John Maguire (17-3) and Dennis Siver (19-8) vs. “The Gun” Diego Nunes (17-2), UFC on Fuel TV: Gustafsson vs. Silva has the perfect line up to get fans ready for the following weekend’s UFC 145 card. Paulo Thiago (14-3) will step in to welcome hardcore favorite “Siyar the Great” Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4-1) as an anchor to the event preceding a co-main event between middleweight favorites “All-American” Brian Stann (11-4) and “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8). As always, all eyes are on the main event. This time it’s a knockout fan’s dream match between Swedish powerhouse Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) and returning beleaguered light heavyweight star Thiago Silva (14-2, 1 NC). The match is an important one for both men as it represents a major turning point in their respective careers. Continue reading »

The world’s premiere mixed martial arts organization returns from a month-long hiatus as the UFC presents UFC on FUEL TV 2 live from the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden this Saturday. “The Angel of Death” Damacio Page (15-6) and “One Punch” Brad Pickett (20-6) open up the main card with bantamweight action.  ”The One” John Maguire (17-3) takes on “The Darkness” DaMarques Johnson (15-9) in a welterweight exhibition. “The Killer” Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4-1) makes his long awaited UFC debut when he takes on the very dangerous Brazilian submission specialist Paulo Thiago (14-3). Featherweights collide when “The Gun” Diego Nunes (17-2) takes on Dennis Siver (19-8) in a “Fight of the Night” frontrunner. Before Thiago Silva (14-2) and “The Mauler” Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) battle it out in the card’s headliner, they will have to try to surpass the bar set by “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8) and “The All-American” Brian Stann (11-4) in the co-main event. Stann and Sakara are two of the middleweight’s top names with the damage to show. However, only one of them can climb higher up the division’s ladder after their showdown in Stockholm. Hardcore fans are all about Siyar Bahadurzada being the favorite in his UFC debut, however Paulo Thiago (blue gloves) has faced and defeated far superior competition in his time with the UFC. (Photo courtesy of Sherdog)

After a month of flying under the MMA radar, the UFC presents UFC on Fuel TV: Gustafsson vs. Silva to whet the appetite of its fans prior to UFC 145 the following weekend. Thiago Silva (14-2, 1 NC) makes his return to the Octagon against Swedish killer “The Mauler” Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) as the main event following a stellar co-main involving  “All-American” Brian Stann (11-4) and “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8). “One Hit” Brad Pickett (20-6) and “The Angel of Death” Damacio Page (15-6) will open the card before “The Darkness” DaMarques Johnson (15-9) squares off with “The One” John Maguire (17-3) and Dennis Siver (19-8) goes to war with “The Gun” Diego Nunes (17-2). However, the fight that has the hardcore MMA fan base salivating is an affair between Brazilian welterweight Paulo Thiago (14-3) and Afghan phenom “Siyar the Great” Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4-1). While most casual fans have likely not heard of “Siyar the Great”, he has made quite an impression on the sport’s diehards with dominant wins over “The Eraser” Derrick Noble (26-15), “The Natural” John Alessio (34-14), and “Cyborg” Evangelista Santos (18-15). Thiago is known mainly for his dark horse obliteration of “Kos” Josh Koscheck (17-5), but is still the young Afghan’s stiffest test to date.   Continue reading »

The Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden hosts the UFC’s second installment of UFC on Fuel TV this Saturday with UFC on Fuel 2: Gustafsson vs. Silva.  The bantamweights start off the main card as “The Angel of Death” Damacio Page (15-6) clashes with “One Punch” Brad Pickett (20-6). Ultimate Fighter alumni “The Darkness” DaMarques Johnson (15-9) takes on fellow welterweight “The One” John Maguire (17-3). Paulo Thiago (14-3) is charged with the task of welcoming long awaited prospect “The Killer” Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4-1) in his UFC debut in the welterweight division. In the co-main event, “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8) and “The All-American” Brian Stann (11-4) are set to engage in a middleweight match-up. Thiago Silva (14-2) makes his return to action after a year long lay-off to take on the hometown hero, “The Mauler” Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) in the main event. In the middle of all this action, two featherweights are set to meet when “The Gun” Diego Nunes  (17-2) welcomes Dennis Siver (19-8) from the lightweight division.  With both men being strikers at heart who refuse to back down, it is a fight that all will be dying to watch. Following more than a month-long hiatus in which the only Zuffa action took place on The Ultimate Fighter Live, the UFC returns to action on Fuel TV for UFC on Fuel 2: Gustafsson vs. Silva. Taking center stage is a match-up between Swedish phenom “The Mauler” Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) and returning Brazilian killer Thiago Silva (14-2, 1 NC). “All-American” Brian Stann (11-4) pulled co-main duties against “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8) while Paulo Thiago (14-3), Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4-1), Dennis Siver (19-8), and “The Gun” Diego Nunes (17-2) anchor the main card with a pair of solid bouts. “One Punch” Brad Pickett (20-6) and “The Angel of Death” Damacio Page (15-6) will open the card and TUF alum “The Darkness” DaMarques Johnson (15-9) is set to face off with “The One” John Maguire (17-3) in a welterweight affair. Johnson has made a pedestrian 4-3 mark in the UFC and is in serious need of a second consecutive win to make anything of his career in the organization, but he faces a stern test in the British submission artist John Maguire who took care of his UFC debut jitters at UFC 138 when he increased his winning streak to six.    Continue reading »

Headlining the event is a light heavyweight match-up between Sweden’s own “The Mauler” Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) and wrecking machine Thiago Silva (14-2-1). Former USMC and war hero “All-American” Brian Stann (11-4) returns to battle against another warrior in Rome, Italy’s “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8) in a middleweight bout. United Glory, Sengoku, and Shooto veteran “The Great” Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4) makes his UFC debut against Brazilian bad boy Paulo Thiago (14-3). Despite a laundry list of substitutions and injuries, UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz still made good on their delivery of entertaining fights. Philadelphia saw “age” meet “experience” in the card’s opener. An upcoming middleweight stepped up to the main card to face a veteran in his quest to establish himself in the UFC. Two seasoned fighters in the welterweight division added another notch in their combined 100+ fight career. The co-main event truly played into the phrase, “don’t blink” as two 185lbs. contenders collided. In the main event, two former light heavyweight champions met again after their first fight in 2007, only this time with serious title implications for the victor. Now that all has been said and done, here is a recap of UFC 133’s main card and possible match-ups that could be seen for those who had their hand raised. Continue reading »

After a revitalizing win at UFC 132, Tito Ortiz (top) steps in on short notice to take on Rashad Evans. Despite coming to a draw in their first encounter, Ortiz showed he had overall control of the fight in all aspects and will hope to validate this with a huge victory come August 6. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

The Wells Fargo Center holds the latest installment of MMA action when UFC 133 takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this Saturday night. Opening the main card off,  Rory MacDonald (11-1) is set to prove how dangerous he is when he faces submission artist “Quicksand” Mike Pyle (21-6-1).  “El Conquistador” Jorge Rivera (18-8) was originally slated to trade hands with “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8) but will now face Constantinos Philippou (7-2) after the latter suffered an unfortunate ACL injury.  Two of the sport’s most seasoned veterans grace the card when “Superman” Dennis Hallman (45-13-2) and “Bad Boy” Brian Ebersole (40-14-1) meet. In the co-main event, “The Phenom” Vitor Belfort (19-9) will test his lightning fast hands against the always game Judoka, “Sexyama” Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-4). The night ends with a bang when “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (16-8-1) steps in on short notice to replace “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (8-0) against “Sugar” Rashad Evans (15-1-1) in the main event. Evans stood in line for the next shot at the 205lbs. belt until injuries set him back, and Ortiz appears to have a second wind in his career. In such a pivotal time for the light heavyweight division, this encore of their 2007 battle could spell out serious title implications for the victor. Continue reading »

Before the bright lights shine down on“The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (16-8-1) and “Sugar” Rashad Evans (15-1-1) at UFC 133 for the second time in their careers, the UFC will treat fans to an exciting card stacked to the hilt with veteran fighters. Middleweight fan favorites “The Phenom” Vitor Belfort (19-9) and “Sexyama” Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-4) will fight to get themselves back in the title picture after a pair of heartbreaking losses, “Superman” Dennis Hallman (45-13-2) and the Midwestern brawler Brian Ebersole (40-14-1) will square off at welterweight, and grappling aces “Quicksand” Mike Pyle (21-6-1) and “The Water Boy” Rory MacDonald (11-1) will bring everything they’ve got into the cage. Also appearing on the card are “El Conquistador” Jorge Rivera (18-8) and Costantinos Philippou (7-2), two middleweights who have had the task of rebounding from recent losses made all the more difficult by suffering late replacements in opponents. Rivera, who was brutally KO’d by “The Count” Michael Bisping (21-3) in February, was originally slated to fight “Legionarius” Alessio Sakara (15-8) who had to pull out with a knee injury. Philippou was then pulled from his fight with Rafael Natal (12-3-1), a bout he had already taken on short notice, to replace Sakara. Continue reading »

Feast or Famine. Such is life. Such is MMA. I think over the last week there were about 738 fights. UFC on Versus: Kampmann vs. Sanchez, Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson, Bellator 35 aka The Welterweight Tournament, Chicago Cagefighting Championship with lovable Twitter Smartass/Badass Felice Herrig and the venerable legend and fan favorite Jens “Lil Evil” Pulver headlining.  GASP! That’s too much, Billy!! ( From Buffalo 66 http://twitpic.com/4784p3 ) See, now you’re all in on my references. And yes, for the record, I shot that from my TV & uploaded it, just so you would get the reference. I love you that much… Well, either that or I was just procrastinating. Tomato – Tomahto.

So what do I do? Do I focus on a few key fights and ignore everything else or do quick thoughts on everything? Decisions, decisions. Damn, the new season of The Ultimate Fighter is coming up soon and I’ll have that to add to everything else to write about. I need a nap. Continue reading »

WEC transplant "Last Call" Danny Castillo (red/black trunks) was able to withstand Joe Stevenson's (white/black trunks) powerful wrestling to deliver some punishment of his own brand and earn the Unanimous Decision victory. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

The third installment of UFC: Live on Versus gave the fans of Louisville, Kentucky and viewers at home all the bang without the buck this past Thursday night. More acquisitions from the WEC/UFC merger made their UFC debut and put their divisions on high alert, a newcomer made his UFC debut within weeks of taking a fight on short notice, two middleweights pleaded their case on their ascension to the top of the 185lbs. division mountain, and two welterweights battled in a possible “Fight of the Year” candidate. Though the undercard also had its share of the action, here are some possible match-ups that should happen for the victors off the UFC: Live on Versus 3 main card.

“Last Call” Danny Castillo (10-3) defeats “Daddy” Joe Stevenson (31-12) via Unanimous Decision

Able to survive Stevenson’s takedown attempts and patented Guillotine Chokes, “Last Call” Castillo passed his first UFC test with flying colors. The Facebook-featured match showcased Castillo besting Stevenson with wildfire striking and staggering the former lightweight challenger during the 15-minute contest. If approaching the closing bell there were any doubt beset as to who the fight would have gone to, the final takedown of the match was executed by the former WEC standout “Last Call” and accompanied by Stevenson receiving an unwelcome rain of fists from above, further aiding in handing him his third loss in a row.
