The judges at the Mountaineer Casino and Resort in Chester, West Virginia did not have to make many decisions  last night, as the fighters of the Bellator 71 main card and Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament made the decisions for them. Heavy-hitting Strikeforce veteran “Da Grim” Brett Rogers (12-4) put an abrupt stop to former training partner “Concrete” Kevin Asplund’s (15-2) lengthy win streak before the start of the 205lbs. tourney. Late replacement Tim Carpenter (9-1) submitted Beau Tribolet (7-2) en route to a spot in the tournament semi-finals. ”The Hardcore Kid” Emanuel Newton (18-6) chained together a sixth consecutive victory over fellow Bellator newcomer Roy Boughton (8-3). It took Slovakian 205er and KSW veteran “Pumukli”  Attila Vegh (26-4) just 60 seconds to put away DREAM veteran “Benkei” Zelg Galesic (11-7) in the co-main event. The final act of the night saw multi-promotion 80-fight veteran “Diesel” Travis Wiuff (67-14) finish knockout artist and former USMC soldier ”The Professional” Chris Davis (10-4) in the first round. The inaugural Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament started with eight contenders, and after a combined 20 minutes and 52 seconds of combat, only four remained.  Continue reading »

Clay Guida (left) had a good game plan against Gray Maynard at UFC on FX 4 but his lack of striking acumen saw it degrade into merely running from the fight. (Photo courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.)

The UFC returned to the FX network last night to deliver a free card featuring some of the UFC’s more exciting and colorful characters. Hard nosed British slugger “The Real Deal” Ross Pearson (13-6) went out on his shield in the second in a TKO loss to WEC veteran Cub Swanson (17-5). Crafty veteran and harbinger of the hairrow “Bad Boy” Brian Ebersole (50-14) added an eleventh victory to his winning streak as he survived early then out-foxed his younger opponent TJ Waldburger (15-7) en route to a Unanimous Decision. The co-main saw “Hands of Stone” Sam Stout (18-7) earn a unanimous nod over “The King” Spencer Fisher (24-9) in their “Fight of the Night” winning rubber match, and the headline bout of the evening saw “The Bully” Gray Maynard (11-1-1) and “The Carpenter” Clay Guida (29-13) deliver a cure for insomnia with one of the most lackluster fights in recent memory. Iuri Alcantara (white trunks) has more experience fighting in the big show which will likely give him the edge against Hacran Dias at UFC 147. (Photo courtesy of Sherdog)

The UFC makes another trip to the MMA Mecca of Brazil for UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II tomorrow night. Now headlined by a rematch between “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva (34-11-1) and “Ace” Rich Franklin (28-6), the card was originally built around a TUF: Brazil coaches’ duel but “The Phenom” Vitor Belfort (21-9) was sidelined by an injury. Opening the main card are seasoned Brazilian prospects “Marajo” Iuri Alcantara (28-3) and “Barnabe” Hacran Dias (20-1) followed by a heavyweight tilt between Mike Russow (15-1) and “Vai Cavalo” Fabricio Werdum (15-5). Prior to the main event, “Jason” Rony Mariano Bezerra (10-3) and “Pepey” Godofredo Castro (8-0) will settle the featherweight brackets of TUF: Brazil and “Mutante” Cezar Ferreira (4-2) will face “Serginho” Sergio Moraes (6-1) in the middleweight finals.
