Last week, Ed Perdomo and Bob Berard showed how to use a simple striking combination to set up a basic lateral drop takedown and gain rear mount from the drop. As a mixed martial artist, it is important to be mixed, blending all the techniques and styles studied into one cohesive fighting style. This week, MMA Gospel’s Technique of the Week follows along those same lines. As always, this technique is linked directly to the proceeding week’s maneuver. In this case, the technique is one of the most well known in all of MMA, a mata leão or rear naked choke. The WEC announced today that, due to injury, former WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles (8-1) will be replaced by Joseph Benavidez (9-2) to fight Wagnney Fabiano (14-2) at WEC 52: Faber vs. Mizugaki.
According to Sherdog, Bowles sustained a foot injury, which ultimately led to him pulling out of the November 11 fight. Bowles’ last fight was in March when he lost the bantamweight title to Dominick Cruz (15-1); in that bout, he broke his hand. One may suggest that being so injury prone is a tell-tale sign that Bowles either needs to sustain a strict calcium supplement regimen, or start chugging some milk. Continue reading »
